The Beauty of Make-up

Ah, makeup.  It does wonders.  But only, of course, if you have the cash to buy the perfect brands and colors.  WRONG!  Despite what the magazines and advertisements want you to think, you DON'T have to buy one brand or a very special kind of makeup to get the results you want.  In fact, you can look and feel great for very little money and very little time.  But how?

In any magazine or book you can find the basics to good makeup. Like hot products to use and how to apply them, etc;  Instead of repeating the same stuff to you over and over, we're going to tell you our little hints and tricks to save you money and make you look fabulous.  These aren't the kinds of stuff you'll find anywhere else, so read carefully!

Lips

To make lips look bigger, use a shimmery, light gloss.

Matte or dark lips make them looks smaller.  Only movie stars can pull this off.  Don't try.

Don't buy expensive lipsticks.  Wet n' Wild work just fine and they're only 99 cents.

Don't have the right shade of lipstick?  Make it.  Use any old one you have lying round, then alter the color using foundation to lighten and other colors to darken.

Want a cute shimmer?  Vaseline and eyeshadow.

Make your own lip gloss: mix some Vaseline in a pot with Kool-Aid.  It exfoliates and tastes great!

Never skip the chap stick.  ALWAYS use some (or Vaseline) as a base before putting on lipstick.  Carry some in your pocket 24/7.

Don't lick your lips.  It drys them even more.  Instead, use chap stick.  And if you the taste of your chap stick, get some mints to suck on.  Or get yucky-tasting balm.

Said it once, will say it again: Vaseline is the ULTIMATE gloss.  Invest in a tub.  They're about a dollar and will last you until you're 20.

Ever gone to blot your lips and the tissue stuck all over them?  Been there, done that.  Solution: get some coffee filters and cut them into little squares.  Stash 'em near your makeup.  Use 'em.  You'll thank me.
Want to make your lips look fuller?  Use an eyeshadow pencil and draw a faint line just under the middle of your bottom lip.  Smudge with your finger.  It gives the look of a shadow, hence, a fuller lip.

-Another way for a fuller appearance: dot a little concealer near the center of your bottom lip, spread outward.

Lipstick on your teeth?  Before you leave the house, make an "o" with your lips, stick your finger in, pull it out.  Looks weird, keeps your teeth white, not red.

Gloss = bigger, kissable lips.  Too much= a sticky situation when you actually get that kiss.

Get a chap stick with sunscreen.  The skin on your lips is the most prone to skin cancer than any other area.  When you're 70, you'll thank us.  Besides, a LOT of chap sticks have it built right in.  (Our pick= Blistex Complete Moisture, chap stick original, or Candy Kisses).

Lip Stain

Beetroot Juice
Moisturizer if you don't suit a darkish lip color

For cool, long-lasting color simply dip your finger into beetroot juice and spread evenly over lips. (Careful you don't spill any on your clothes cause it stains.) Note: Don't use a lip brush as the juice will stain the bristles.

If you don't like darker lip color, take your regular moisturizer and mix a tiny, TINY little bit with the juice. I'm talking about smaller than...a pea here! Don't use a lot!! This will lighten the color heaps but won't stain for as long.

Lip Gloss

Vaseline
Cherry Juice

For extra sparkle, glitter, shimmer powder or  loose pink eye-shadow
Empty glitter/gloss/shadow/shimmer/whatever pot

Take Vaseline and fill almost to the top of the pot.
Squeeze cherries (you'll only need a few) into the Vaseline and mix until desired color. If you gleam, add your shimmer powder/pretty lip gloss colored loose eye-shadow. Finished! And the cherry gloss smells great!! You can melt everything down in the microwave if you want a lighter gloss.

Eyes

Want cream eyeshadow?  Mix a little Vaseline with your regular powder.  Or, put the shadow on first and spread the Vaseline over with a Q-tip

Got smudgy mascara?  Use waterproof.  It never smudges or runs, and it's waxier so it keeps your curl longer

If your eyeshadow creases a lot, start by putting a base on before your shadow.  Use concealer or foundation, then put loose powder over it.  THEN put on your eyeshadow, avoiding the crease area as much as possible.

Don't use white eyeshadow if you have light skin (pretty much everything except black- which, by the way, it looks AWESOME on).  It looks tacky.

Instead of using an eyeliner pencil, make your own liquid liner.  Take a small makeup brush and dip it in water.  Then, dip in in powder and line your lids.  Not only does it look silky and shimmery when it dries, but you can use all sorts of colors.  PLUS, it lasts longer.

A little white shimmery shadow does wonders.  Put a little under the arch of your eyebrow to make your eyes stand out.  Put a tiny bit on the inside corner of your eyes to make them look farther apart.

Don't use blush for eyeshadow.  It's not FDA recommended (a.k.a. eye infections, etc;).  Plus, red shadow makes you look tired.

Use an eyeliner pencil to fill in patches in your eyebrows.

Brown mascara is great if you want that "natural" look, especially for s.

Put a little Vaseline on your lashes at night to strengthen and condition.  It also works as great clear mascara.

Who needs brow gel?  A little hairspray on your fingertips works just as well- just be careful not to get it near your eyes.

Invest in an eyelash curler (I've seen ones for as little as $2).  They are the ultimate eye tool (better than mascara!)

The main source of clumps is leftover makeup on your lashes. Make sure they're super clean when you start.  And use an eyelash comb - they rock.

Hair

Hair...it's one of the biggest "problems" girls have today.  It's always too short, too long, too wavy, too straight, too thin, too thick, whatever!  But your hair doesn't have to be such a problem...in fact, you may find ways to your hair - just the way it is!  We promise.  So check out these tips - and if you still your lovely locks, drop us a line via the form below!

Product Cheats

Run out of hair gel?  Shampoo can do the trick.  When used (lightly) on your hair, it works as a great hair-holder.

Need to smooth away some fly-away (a.k.a. "frizz")?  Rub a little conditioner or hand lotion on your hands, smooth over your hair (not too much!).  Or, spray some hairspray on a brush and brush your hair with it.

Got static? Use a dryer sheet. Smooth over your strands after you brush.  Smells nice, too!

Got static hair you can't style? (Yes, the dryer sheet does work, but if you're trying to style and keep brushing your hair, it will keep coming back)  Spritz a little water on your hair (JUST a LITTLE, please).

Really greasy hair, but can't shower in time?  If you have light-colored hair, use baby powder.  It absorbs some of the grease and helps your feel fresh.  It may make dark hair looks pasty, though, so use caution.

Want sunny streaks?  You've probably heard this: use lemon juice.  This is great if you're headin' to the beach for the day.  Carry some of the juice in a spray bottle, mixed with a little dab of conditioner and sunscreen.

Must Have Products

If you want straight hair, get a flat iron.  They're only about $15, and they are a MUST-HAVE if you want straight hair.  Don't bother with all that blow-dry/brush stuff, just dry it regular and use one of these.  Trust us.

Got parched hair that just lacks ?  Grab some CitriShine spray, or any silicone-shine product.  One spritz adds sparkle and shine.  Just don't use too much - it'll look greasy!

Hairspray.  You need it.  Everybody does.  It's the basic hold-together product.  Any time you need to keep your 'do just so, use some.  Just the right amount will give you flex and hold, despite the "hard-hairspray-head" stereotype.  Grab a cheap bottle from Suave- inexpensive, yet does the trick.

A good brush.  Your brush-needs vary with your hair type, so try to find which one is best for you.  Many website give you the low-down on specifics, to search for one at Google.com.  The right brush is the key to hair happiness.

Elastics.  Don't ever use rubber bands. Ever. In a pinch, still don't. You can get, like, 50 for $2 or so at any drug store.

Style Ideas

Remember: Styles vary for everyone- hair types, lengths, and styles.
Ponytails are great for ANY hair.  Want a new twist on the old-school 'do?  Try wrapping one small piece around your elastic and bobby-pinning it underneath.  It looks like you're holding your hair up - with your hair!  It's cute, and many celebs are 'doing it now (forget the bun).

A great way to put a new spin onto your everyday style (low ponytail, braids, or anything with a part) is to make a side part.  It looks very slick and classic.  Try pulling a small, short piece out of the side with the most hair for a cute edge!

Many girls like to cut two short pieces around their face, so they fall down when you have a ponytail or other up-do in.  When you do this, start with just a LITTLE of your hair (you can always add more).  Cut around nose-length and work your way up if you want them shorter.

Like the "messy bun" look but can't seem to master it?  The trick (take it from us- we're pros at this style!) is to WET your hair down when you do it.  Even though we've been doing it for years, none of us can do it with dry hair.

Pony-woes?  Flip your head up-side-down when you're doing your ponytail for a smooth, sleek result.  Or, lay down on your bed with your head hanging off the side and do it like that.

Need a hair-upgrade without the cut or color?  Try flipping the ends in a different direction than they usually go.  The best way to do this is with your straightening iron.  For instance, if you hair usually curls inward at the ends, try flipping it outward.  Or do some out, some in.

Want to curl your hair but don't want to deal with irons or rollers?  Put your hair in a messy-bun when it's wet and wait for it to dry (or sleep with one in).  When you take it out, you'll have cute waves and curls!  Now, how easy was THAT?

Two high buns on either side of your head look very cute.  Experiment with different styles- far back, more to the sides of your head, messy, twisty (think cinnamon bun style), big, small.

Want great tips for your hair style? email!  It only takes a second.  It's personal- JUST for you, and could save you a lot of stress! Come on, just do it!

Hair De-Frizzer

1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon lime juice
1/2 cup of water
Empty spray bottle

Pour ingredients into spritz bottle and shake to mix. Spray onto your hair to tame static. Store remaining mixture in the refrigerator. Goodbye, frizzy hair!

Skin

With concealer, less is more.  Trust us - use only a tiny bit to cover a blemish, you'll be surprised at home much better it works.  Sounds weird, but it's totally true.

Invest in toner;  St. Ives makes a great inexpensive toner. After sports, this is great for clean-up.  It is also good after you've been touching your face, or picking zits - it disinfects and helps reduce bacteria and oil.  And, it feels so good!

Got oil problems?  Get those oil-absorbing sheets.  They're great.

Make a skin-smoothing face mask- use some plain yogurt and some oatmeal.  Spread it on, wait ten minutes, wipe it off.

Got oily t-zone?  Take the white of an egg (NOT the yoke) and spread it on for 10 min,  Wipe it off.

Exfoliate once a week- it cleans your pores and rubs away skin.  Mix some sugar into your ordinary cleanser.  Mixing it with milk is also nice.  Wet your face, scrub it on in GENTLE circles- not too hard!!!.  Rinse off.  Pat your face dry, then use some toner to get all the residue off and some moisturizer to soothe your skin.

Accidentally picked a zit too much and now it's bleeding?  Quick!  smother it in Vaseline, then wipe it off.  Repeat until it stops to bleed, then wipe some toner over it and put on a thin layer of Vaseline.

Out of toner? Use some diluted mouthwash.

Skin looking matte and unhealthy?  Rub a little Vaseline on the crests (tops) of your cheeks.  Not too much!  It'll give you a subtle glow without being too greasy.
Too cheap to buy loose powder?  It's a necessity, so don't skip it!  A light dusting holds your makeup on all day, and it sops up oil and grease.  But don't buy it, you've probably got some already.  What are we talking about?  Use some cornstarch or baby powder instead- it works wonders.  Apply it lightly with a big, fluffy makeup brush.  Ah, you've gorgeous.

Got a little patch of flaky skin but not enough time to go exfoliate and moisturize?  Take a strip of scotch tape, stick it on, tear it off.  It may hurt a little and may take a couple "rips" to get the skin off, but it works.  When you're done, cleans the area with toner and put some Vaseline on to soothe it.  Moisturize like crazy.  And don't do it too often.

Take some milk and put it in the blender with some yogurt and some oatmeal.  Spread it on your face, let sit for a while.  Rinse it off.  This is very moisturizing.

Use Visene on a zit in a pinch to "get the red out". (Works better on zits than it does on your eyes...)

Puffy eyes?  Put some ice cubes in a bag, wrap in a washcloth, and put on eyes for 5 min.  Also do this to a big, puffy, zit when you're in a pinch.

Don't use too much zit medication at night. Your skin needs time to breathe and heal.

Stop that picking!  The more you touch your face, the more oil gets deposited on it.  Oil=clogged pores, clogged pores= zits. Get it? Got it? Good!

Masques

Soothing Moisturizer: Mix yogurt, oatmeal, and some conditioner in a bowl.  Spread it on DRY hair.  Let sit twenty minutes, rinse thoroughly (you may have to shampoo to get all the oatmeal out.)

Hot Oil Treatment: Instead of buying one in the store, use Veggie (a.k.a "canola") oil or olive oil.  Pour in a bowl, put in the microwave until it's hot (but not so hot it burns your scalp).  Smooth over your hair, or, if it's mild, massage into your scalp.  Wrap your head in plastic wrap or tinfoil, cover with a towel (to help keep it in place).  Wait ten-twenty minutes, then unwrap your disgusting hair and hop in the shower.  It may take a couple shampoos to get all the oil out- but your hair will feel great!  If you get up to four rinses and it's still oily, get out, put your hair up, and wash again the next day.

Mayo Treatment: Mayo contains oil and eggs, which are great for your hair.  If you haven't tried this yet, you should.  Work some mayo through your wet or dry hair, wait 10- 20 minutes, rinse.

Deep Conditioning: You don't need to buy a special treatment if you just want to extra-condition your hair.  Work some conditioner through your dry hair, wrap in towel, wait for 10 minutes.  Shampoo and condition as you do normally.  Do this once or twice a week.

Silky Skin Treatment

1 cup rolled oats

Plastic bag or stocking

If your skin is feeling a little rough and dry, grab some rolled oats and pour them into a plastic bag or stocking. Tie tightly, and take into your next bath. Rub gently over your skin in a circular motion. When you're finished, poke a few holes in the bag and stew until you're done. Coat yourself in moisturizer after-wards and you'll be feeling like a princess!

Toner

1 tablespoon lemon juice

50mL water

Simply mix the two ingredients and swipe over blemished skin with a cotton wool bud, avoiding eyes. Simple! You'll want to moisturize after-wards, as this may dry out your skin a little. You can also use tea-tree oil found in your home medicine cupboard if you don't have any lemon. Don't mix this with the water though, and again, use a cotton bud to wipe over face.

Soothing Face Mask

1/2 ripe avocado
1/2 tablespoon avocado oil
2 teaspoons thickened cream
A few drops of sweet/smelling essential oil/ a tiny bit of sweet-smelling moisturizer

I know it sounds disgusting, but for smooth, moisturized skin mix ingredients together into a paste. Apply to a damp face for 10 minutes, then rinse off
.

Body

Stressed? (Hey, who isn't?)  Come on, turn on your fave tunes, change into some comfy clothes, make a face mask, and watch a "feel-good" chick flick.  Or, relax in the tub with a soothing tomato bath.  When your body feels good physically, it makes you feel better mentally.  So relax! Besides, stress give you zits.

Scrubs

Want to smooth your feet, hands, elbows, and legs?  This easy, from-the-kitchen scrub is perfect.  First, put some regular granulated sugar in a bowl.  Next, add some veggie (a.k.a. canola) or olive oil slowly- only enough so it makes a thick paste.  Go to your tub and sit on the side.  Massage the paste (which will feel like wet sand) all over your feet, legs, arms, and hands.  Rinse it off (it may be a little tricky- oil and water don't mix) and dry off completely.  Your bod will feel superbly smooth!!  This works because the sugar gently exfoliates  (wipes away gross skin cells and dirt) and the oil softens.  Do it as often as you like :)

This scrub is similar to the first one, except you're not using oil- you're using fruit!  Take a grapefruit and split it in half.  Take sugar and sprinkle it on both halves.  Now, take one of the halves and scrub it over your bod- especially your elbows and heels.  If you need to add more sugar to the grapefruit from time to time, go ahead.  Rinse and dry your bod, and throw the half you just used out. Now, go enjoy your smooth skin as you eat the other half of the grapefruit!

Body Buffing Exfoliating Scrub

1 banana

1 tablespoon powdered milk
1 tablespoon oatmeal
2 tablespoons honey
1 cup rock salt
1 cup olive oil
Any sweet-smelling essential oil if you l-u-v pretty-smelling fragrances. This is an optional though.

For smooth, silky skin make your own body scrub, by mashing and mixing all the above ingredients together in a large bowl. Transfer into an empty container or large bottle and keep in the shower to massage over your skin. Use every 3 days/ whenever u need a mood lift and feel like splashing out!

Feet, Hands and Nails

Feet

Foot softener: get a cucumber and some milk. Chop up the cucumber and put it in the blender.  Blend until it's really chopped- almost a paste.  Heat a little milk in the microwave or on the stove, and pour it over the cucumber just enough to make it like a heavy-lotion texture.  Spread the mixture all over your feet- make sure it's really thick (you may need to whip up another cucumber).  Now, wrap your feet in plastic wrap and a warm towel.  Kick back (literally) for ten to twenty minutes.  Waddle over to the tub and rinse off your feet.  Not only will they feel smooth, they'll smell yummy too!

Ever walked around all day (playing sports, mall-hiking) and when you get home, you feel like your feet are gonna' fall off?  Give 'em a nice, soothing soak!  First, boil some water over the stove.  Add some chamomile tea bags and let them steep in the water for a while- at least until
the water cools down enough so you can put your feet in it without being in pain.  Plop your tootsies on in, and relax. (oh yeah, before you put your feet in the water you can take some out in a cup and drink it as you soak your toes!)

Other alternatives to foot soaks:
Add some of your favorite conditioner to warm water
Add your favorite moisturizing body wash
Use dish soap- it may dry your feet a little, so you'll have to slather lotion on them after (or get your boyfriend to do it- even better!).  It gets rid of all that sweat and dirt, though, and is fun and bubbly.
Add another kind of tea - like Green or Lemon.  Mix a bunch of different kinds to make a unique smell to relax you.

*Remember, you can't use any kind of oil or lotion- it doesn't mix with water!

Old trick: before you go to bed, smother Vaseline all over your feet and put on cotton socks.  You'll wake up with super smooth tootsies!

Whenever you put lotion on your bod or hands (which your should do every night before you sleep and when you wake up) put a lot on your feet.  If you do it regularly, it'll help 'em from getting rough and gnarly like they always do!

Hands and Nails

Nail Tip: After removing your polish and buffing your nail, smother your  cuticles and nails in Vaseline and wait ten minutes.  wipe it off and paint your nails.

Always cut your cuticles carefully and apply Vaseline after to help them heal faster.

Don't chew! Chewed nails NEVER look good.  And don't bite those hangnails, either.  Carry nail clippers in your backpack for in-school emergencies.  To keep 'em from forming in the first place, always apply lotion to your nails/cuticles at least three times a day. (Concentrate on just that area, not just your hands)

Want whiter nails?  After removing polish, soak your tips in bleach (or the not-as-drying alternative, lemon juice).  Don't do this too often, though, and moisturize after.

Soak your fingertips in veggie or olive oil for ten minutes to moisturize- this keeps your nails and cuticles healthy.

ALWAYS moisturize your hands.  Put some lotion in a soap dispenser in your bathroom to make your hands smooth.  Put some in your locker for between-class rubs.  You'll be really surprised at what a difference it makes in the appearance and feeling of your hands and nails.

Other

Shimmer, baby shimmer!  If you don't feel like buying shimmer gel for your bod, dust some loose shimmer or some sparkly eyeshadow on your shoulders.  Then, smooth some Vaseline over it.  Vaseline alone on your shoulders looks totally hot.

Wear sunscreen. In forty years, you'll thank me.  If you always forget to put it on before you go out, switch to a lotion that has sunscreen in it.  That way, you'll be applying it every day anyways.

Lots of girls draw temporary tattoos on their bods with pens. Instead, try eyeliner.  It's better for your skin, washes off easier, and is easy to write with.

Moisturize your legs before and after you shave them to keep your skin in check.  Also, use a razor with protective guards- MADE for women.  I would recommend using the Intuition shaver; it comes with replaceable cartridges that contain moisturizer on them so that you'll never have to use shaving cream again!
